OVERVIEW

Design Thesis

The philosophy behind every Radical Imagination experience.

THE PREMISE

Technology is not the point. The point is that a seven-year-old put on a VR headset in a Baptist church and met W.E.B. Du Bois. The point is that an elder in a beret shook a stranger's hand and stayed. The point is that a woman in camo sat with a calligrapher and learned to write a Du Bois quote by hand.

The technology disappears. What remains is the encounter.

THE TWO AESTHETICS

Every RI experience lives between two poles. The tension between them is the design.

Fire and Void

Black background. Gold type. Particle systems. GLSL shaders. Fire-text dissolving into ash. The Constitution burns. Hieroglyphics illuminate. A coffle passes in silence. Typography set in VTC Du Bois. Spatial audio that positions accusations around you.

Warmth and Craft

Felt worlds. Knitted figures. Gold charger plates. Cotton branches. Hand-bound guest books with deckled pages. Calligraphy workshops. A reading nook between two leather armchairs. Everything Du Bois did by hand at the 1900 Paris Exposition — 63 data visualizations drawn with ink and ruler — was craft before it was data science.

Fire and Void is what you experience. Warmth and Craft is how we tell you about it.

The VR gallery is fire. The Instagram carousel about the VR gallery is felt.

PERMACULTURE STACKING

Every element serves three or more functions. If it serves only one, it doesn't belong.

Gold tarot card

1. Artifact (collectible)2. Digital key (NFC)3. Social content (photographable)4. Credential (Open Badge)5. Merch ($15 revenue)

RPi voice station

1. Docent (speaks when approached)2. Installation art (hidden, mysterious)3. Data collection (anonymous engagement)4. Press hook ("objects that speak")

Letter box

1. Visitor participation2. Community archive3. Sacred space (no sponsors)4. Content source (read aloud at closing)

Pelican case

1. Transport2. Setup surface3. Brand statement ("everything fits in a suitcase")4. Scalability proof

THE METS SWING FORMULA

For interactive and commercial experiences:

ORDINARY ACT

You do something with your body

HIDDEN ANALYSIS

Technology sees what you can't

LARGER STORY

System connects you to something bigger

PERSONAL REVEAL

Result is specific to you

SOUVENIR

Proof the magic happened

WHAT WE WON'T DO

  • x
Slick for the sake of slick. If the animation doesn't serve the story, cut it.
  • x
Tech demos. Nobody leaves remembering the frame rate. They remember the moment.
  • x
Generic UI. No raw buttons, no clickable divs, no card grids with inconsistent radii.
  • x
Extractive design. We don't flatten cultures into aesthetics. Source provenance is tracked. Community consent is ongoing.
